CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's gymnastics scored a 195.700 and captured a victory over Sacramento State (195.250) on Friday night behind the strong efforts from all three Thunderbird all-arounders. Jamie Armijo, Michaela Chernoch and Caitlin Kennedy led the T-Birds in the all-around as each scored a career high during night with a 39.275, 39.200 and 39.125, respectively.

"We are starting to do the little things right," head coach Scott Bauman said after the meet. "It is great to see the little things we work on in practice make their way to the competition floor."

Southern Utah opened the meet strong with season-best marks on vault and bars with a 48.925 and 49.050, respectively. Armijo led the way for the Thunderbirds on vault with a 9.825, finishing second on the event, with Chernoch and Armijo finishing one-two on bars with a 9.875 and 9.850, respectively. Each mark on bars represented a personal best for the gymnasts with Kennedy and freshman Arlyn Amor also posting career-best marks of 9.800 and 9.775, respectively.

Another freshman, Baylie Divino, also notched a career-best mark on the night with a 9.775 on vault, competing last in the lineup for the first time this season. Divino was joined by Rochelle Bernier (9.800), Kennedy (9.775) and Jensen (9.750) in rounding out the team score for SUU on the event.

Southern Utah held a 97.975-97.675 lead over Sacramento State after two rotations, but the Hornets cut the lead to less than a tenth following the third rotation, 146.725-146.650. CSUS recorded its highest team score of the night on floor with a 48.975 during the rotation behind three 9.800's and a 9.825, recorded by Kalliah McCartney.

The Thunderbirds scored a 48.750 on beam with Armijo on top with a career-best 9.825 after hitting her first beam routine of the season. Kennedy and freshman Natalie Trejo followed with matching 9.750's with Chernoch (9.725) and Bernier (9.700) rounding out the team score.

The Flippin' Birds got out to a rocky start during the final rotation as Trejo opened on floor and fell out of bounds on her first pass to score a 8.925. However, SUU finished the night 5-for-5 with Chernoch capping the rotation with a team-best 9.850 to take home the individual title and seal the victory for the Thunderbirds.

"There is no other gymnast than Michaela Chernoch that I would want to go out and finish out a meet for us," Bauman said of the routine. "She did a great job and showed why she is one of the best floor workers in the country."

Brittney Jensen finished just behind Chernoch with a 9.825 to finish tied for second on the event. Kennedy (9.800), Armijo (9.775) and Ana Jaworski (9.725) wrapped up the team total of 48.975 for Southern Utah.

Armijo, Chernoch and Kennedy finished first, third and fourth in the all-around, marking the first all-around title for Armijo in her collegiate career and the first time a Southern Utah gymnast has gone 39-plus in the all-around this season.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Provo on Saturday, February 23 to face Brigham Young University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
