Falls on Beam Keep T-Birds from Catching Cougars in Provo

PROVO, Utah - Southern Utah University gymnastics opened the meet at Brigham Young University on Saturday afternoon going 21-for-21 on routines, but suffered three falls to end the meet to score a 194.075. The Cougars closed out the meet with one of their best team scores on floor (48.900) to take the victory with a 195.800.

Southern Utah opened the meet on bars with a trio of 9.775's from Michaela Chernoch, Arlyn Amor and Caitlin Kennedy bookended by a 9.800 from Jamie Armijo and a 9.725 from Rochelle Bernier to score a 48.850 on the event.

BYU began on vault, scoring a 48.900 to open with a narrow half-tenth advantage. The margin grew to 97.950-97.725  following the second rotation as the Cougars scored a 49.050 on bars to Southern Utah's 48.875 on vault.

Chernoch led the way for the T-Birds on the event with a career-best 9.825 to tie for the individual title and was followed by a pair of 9.800's from Armijo and Bernier. Kennedy and Bailey Divino rounded out the team score with matching 9.725's.

Southern Utah narrowed the gap (146.600-146.425) in the third rotation, scoring a 48.750 on floor to BYU's 48.700 on the balance beam. Chernoch and Armijo finished one-two for the T-Birds with season bests of 9.875 and 9.825, respectively, giving Chernoch her second title on the afternoon. Jensen was just behind with a 9.750 with Natalie Trejo (9.650) and Kennedy (9.600) rounding out the team score.

The Thunderbirds opened strong on beam with a 9.800 from Trejo, a season-best 9.775 from Jaworski and a season-best 9.850 from Kennedy that gave the senior the title on the event. However, Southern Utah encountered its first mishaps of the meet as Chernoch, Bernier and Armijo suffered falls during their routines, scoring a 9.225, 8.350 and 9.000, respectively.

The falls kept the T-birds from catching the Cougars with the home side taking the 195.800-194.075 victory. Kennedy, Chernoch and Armijo wrapped up the competition with a 38.950, 38.700 and 38.475, respectively, in the all-around.

Southern Utah will be back in action next weekend traveling to face Boise State University. The meet in Boise is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with live stats anticipated to be available online at
