STOCKTON, Calif., Mar. 3 – The Southern Utah softball team (3-13) snapped a seven-game skid with a 9-5 victory over the University of Nevada (9-11) during the final day of competition at the Libby Matson Tournament on Sunday. SUU junior infielder Kadi Henderson sparked the Thunderbird offense with her second home run in as many days in the win and led all tournament participants with a total of eight RBI on the week.

The T-Birds gave up an early run to the Wolf Pack but rallied behind Henderson’s three run blast in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage. Kelsey Bryant and Kelli Hales both reached base before coming around to score as Henderson drove a shot over the wall in right field to put SUU out in front.

The lead didn’t last long however as Nevada came back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame to grab a 4-3 edge. Ashley Butera drove in a pair with a double to left field and Megan Fincher tacked on an infield RBI single to put the Pack up by one.

Southern Utah trailed until the top of the fifth where it would record its best inning on offense of the season to date. Bryant, Henderson, Madison Resley and Katie Olinger started the inning off by stringing together four straight hits, with Olinger’s single bringing in the tying run. Therysa Dyer then brought in two more scores with a base hit down the left field line and Griffin added another with a shot to centerfield. Henderson eventually put the sixth run of the frame on the board with a base-knock that set the margin at 9-4 in favor of the Thunderbirds.

The Wolf Pack were able to get a run back in their ensuing turn at the plate, but that would be it as Ariel Zimmerman (2-6) shut Nevada down over the final two innings to pick up her second win of the season as SUU went on to take the contest by a final count of 9-5.

Zimmerman pitched a total of 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two. Danielle Axe got the start in the circle for Southern Utah where she went 2.1 innings and allowed four earned runs. Megan Dortch (3-5) was charged with the loss after surrendering six runs on six hits in four innings. Karlyn Jones also threw three innings in relief, during which she allowed three runs on six hits.

The T-Birds will be back on the West Coast next week for a four-game tournament at UC Riverside. SUU starts things off with a pair of matchups on Thursday, first against Buffalo at 10:00 a.m., followed by an afternoon meeting with former Summit League foe IUPUI at 12:30. The team then takes on UCR in back-to-back games on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30. Complete coverage of Thunderbird softball is available at www.suutbirds.com.
