SUU Women's Tennis Evens Conference Mark with Win over Vikings

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's tennis picked up its first win in Big Sky Conference play with a  5-2 victory over Portland State on Friday. The result evened the Thunderbirds' record at 1-1 in conference play and moved their overall record to 5-4 on the year.

SUU opened the match taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Veronika Rogova and Anastasiia Vasileva led through most of their match at No. 2, but a late push by Portland State's Mandy Mallen and Marti Pellicano pushed the set into extra games. Rogova and Vasileva eventually pulled out the match, 9-7.

Olya Kunz and Alex Ivanova, playing at No. 1 doubles, were down a break, 7-8, late in the set, but came back to square the frame 8-8 and force a tiebreaker. The duo then breezed to a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker to secure the doubles point.

Kunz, Rogova and Ivanova then came back in singles for staight-set victories to give Southern Utah enough points to win the match. Rogova jumped out to a quick lead in her contest at No. 2 singles, winning the first set 6-0 and then finished off the match 6-1 over the Vikings' Marina Todd.

Kunz was next at No. 1 singles, returning to the top of the lineup after a two-match stint at No. 2, putting away PSU's Mallen 6-1, 6-3. Ivanova only gave up three games in her match, besting Portland State's Kelsey Frey at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Vasileva picked up Southern Utah's final point on the day with a win at No. 6 singles, fighting back after losing the first set 6-3 to win the second set at love, 6-0. The Perm, Russia native then played through a ten-point tiebreaker in the third set and beat the Vikings' Alexa McDonald, 10-8.

Madeline Skaras and Afton Staheli were defeated in each of their singles matches, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

Southern Utah will continue conference play next weekend, traveling to Northern Colorado for its first Big Sky Conference match on the road this season. The match is Greeley is scheduled for Noon.
