Nate Jewkes Named Big Sky Track Athlete of the Week

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Mar. 19 - Southern Utah distance runner Nate Jewkes was named Big Sky Track Athlete of the Week after a second-place finish in the 5,000-meters at the Occidental Distance Carnival on Mar. 15. The junior leads the Big Sky Conference in the 5,000-meters and currently ranks second in the NCAA Division I.
Jewkes rejoined the competing Thunderbirds at the Oxy Distance Carnival after taking a redshirt indoor season. He entered the outdoor season with a second-place time of 14:11.97 in the 5,000-meter run, followed by teammate Ryan Barrus with a third-place time of 14:12.65. Both men qualified for the conference championship with times falling within the Big Sky standard of 14:40.00.
This award marks Jewkes' third Athlete of the Week citation since Southern Utah entered the BSC, as the runner earned two conference nods during the fall cross country season.
Jewkes will next compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, as the distance squad travels to the San Francisco, Calif., meet on Mar. 29. The Thunderbirds will then compete at the UCLA Invitational, set to take place Apr. 5-6 in Los Angeles, Calif.
