GOODYEAR, Ariz., March 22 – Southern Utah shot 294 on Friday to slip from a tie for third place to 11th at the 16-team Desert Shootout. The Thunderbirds were still within striking distance, however, 15 strokes off the pace of second-round leader Brigham Young, which was one shot up on second-place Illinois.
SUU, which fired a season-low 280 on Thursday, was tied with Kansas at 574 after two rounds at the par-71, 6,925-yard Palm Valley Golf Club.
Freshman John Reid shot 72 on Friday to lead the Thunderbirds at even par 142 in 21st place. Jake Holt, who opened with a round of 68 on Thursday shot 75 on Friday to sit at 143, tied with teammate Sammy Cole, who shot 72 on Friday after Thursday’s 71, in 32nd place. Tim Leonard (71-75, 146) was in 50th place while Taylor Schone (78-75, 153) was 90th. SUU’s Brady Welburn (77-74, 151), playing as an individual, was 83rd.
Wichita State’s Hunter Sparks held the individual lead, at 10-under par 132.
The tournament concludes with the final round Saturday, which begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
