CEDAR CITY, Utah, April 27 – Southern Utah (16-30, 9-6 BSC) trailed visiting Northern Colorado (15-28-1, 5-10) from the fourth inning on in Saturday’s home finale but made a push in the final frame to come within a hit of tying things up. The Bears were able to hold on however to take the game by a final score of 6-4 while also claiming the series with their second win of the weekend.
“We played pretty well this weekend,” stated SUU head coach Kyle Magnusson. “We just can’t give up that many walks and have to do a better job pitching.”
Both teams cruised through the first three innings as the visitors didn’t come up with their first hit of the day until the top of the fourth. Nicole Hudson recorded a pinch hit RBI single and later scored from third on a wild pitch to help Northern Colorado take a 2-0 lead.
The Bears extended the margin with three runs in the top of fifth before SUU got on the board with score on a passed ball by Ariel Morbeck in the bottom half of the inning to bring the count to 5-1. UNC got the run back in the next frame however with a sacrifice fly from Melissa Marchovecchio.
The Thunderbirds trailed by five runs heading into the final inning where senior Kelsey Bryant hit a single back up the middle before advancing to second as Kadi Henderson drew a base on balls. Both runners scored during the next at bat after Cora Cordova hit a single down the right field line to cut the deficit to three. With runners on second and third Morbeck drove a deep shot to left field that came a few feet from clearing the wall as it dropped down for an RBI double. The Bears were then able to make the last out however to hold on for the 6-4 victory.
Cordova and Morbeck recorded all three of the Thunderbirds RBI while Madison Resley finished the day 2-4 at the plate. All three SUU pitchers saw time in the circle but senior Danielle Axe (3-9) took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in a four-inning start.
Jamie Pollack had three RBI for Bears and Hudson added a fourth. Megan Wilkinson (7-15) went 5.2 innings without allowing an earned run to earn the win for Northern Colorado.
SUU closes out its regular season next week with a trip to BYU. The Thunderbirds will play the Cougars twice on Tuesday starting at 5:00 p.m. Southern Utah will then get set to make its first appearance at the Big Sky Tournament on May 10-11. The conference playoffs will be hosted by the regular season champion, which is still yet to been determined.
“We still have a good shot at finishing third going in the tournament,” comment Magnusson. “We won our series against Idaho State and Sacramento State and played really well at Portland State so we should be confident against those teams.”
