Thunderbird T&F Wraps Up NCAA First Round with 5k Finishes

AUSTIN, Texas - Southern Utah University wrapped up competition at the NCAA Track & Field first round on Saturday with a trio of athletes appearing in the men's and women's 5,000-meters.

On the women's side, Kirsten Bradford and Jamie Smith represented the Thunderbirds with each athlete running in separate heats. Bradford, running in the faster of the two heats, finished 20th with a time of 17:31.44 and Smith punctuated her season with a 12th-place finishing time of 16:38.17. The 12 athletes that advanced out of the 5k heats on the women's side all ran under 16:24.80 to advance to the championships.

Ryan Barrus ran in the men's 5k, finishing 18th with a time of 14:52.39. The 12 athletes that advanced out of the 5k heats on the men's side all ran under 14:12.43 to advance to the championships.

Southern Utah came out of the first round with one NCAA Nationals qualifier in Nate Jewkes who will appear in the men's 10k after fishing sixth in his race on Thursday. The NCAA National Championship is scheduled to take place June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
