EUGENE, Ore. - Southern Utah University's Nate Jewkes led the race at the opening gun and ran to an 11th-place finish in the men's 10,000-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday night. The finish garnered second-team All-American recognition for the junior.

The race opened very slowly with the pack averaging a 75-second lap, leading to a 4:59-mile pace. Eventual champion, Lawi Lalang of the University of Arizona, then came to the front of the race and began to push the pace, taking off close to ten seconds per lap after the two-mile mark.

Lalang continued to lead down the stretch, finishing almost 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Paul Katam of UNC Greensboro. Jewkes was as high as sixth going into the final two laps, but dropped off slightly down the stretch to record a time of 29:56.21, finishing 11th in his first outdoor track & field national championship appearance. However, the appearance wasn't his first on a national stage as he has already run twice at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships.

"This will really go a long way for him today," head coach Eric Houle said after the meet. "He has two more years to compete and already has a great deal of postseason experience. I'm looking forward to see how his career continues."
