Smith, a redshirt sophomore from South Jordan, Utah (Bingham HS), averaged 22.0 yards per return in 2012, including a 95-yarder for a touchdown that sparked the Thunderbirds to a come-from-behind win at Portland State. He finished the 2012 season with 660 total kickoff return yards, which is the seventh-highest single-season total in Thunderbird history.
"Congratulations to Josh Smith on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "In his first year as a return specialist for Southern Utah, Smith returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Portland State. In 2013, Smith will be one of the nation's top kick returners to watch."
Smith gives the Thunderbirds six players on their respective CFPA watch lists. He joins senior wide receiver Fatu Moala, sophomore defensive end James Cowser, sophomore linebacker Zak Browning, senior place kicker Colton Cook and senior punter Brock Miller as players to watch in 2013.
Two SUU players have earned year-end honors from the CFPA in the last three seasons: San Diego Chargers draft selection Brad Sorensen, who earned the 2012 CFPA Elite Quarterback Award, and Arizona Rattlers WR Tysson Poots, who took home the 2010 CFPA Elite Wide Receiver Award.
