CEDAR CITY, Utah - Aug. 28 - Several new additions to the Thunderbird Cross Country program are gearing up for competition as the squads prepare to open the 2013 season with the Idaho State Invitational. Six members of both the men’s and women’s squads will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the head-to-head meet set to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
“We send a younger group of athletes to Idaho State in order to give them an opportunity to race and develop,” head coach Eric Houle said. “It helps us to have them gain that experience while the more seasoned athletes continue to train and prepare for meets like the UC Riverside Invitational.”
Three freshmen will be among the competing Thunderbirds this weekend, as Sean Newcomb, Rachel Stone and Morgan Vorwaller begin their collegiate careers facing the Bengals. Transfer student Justin Secakuku will also begin his career as a Thunderbird at the Idaho State meet.
Returning athletes Devan Antczak, Anthony Brown and Josh Gardner will also compete with the men at ISU, as well as Ibrahim Ahmed, who rejoins the T-Bird squad after redshirting during the 2012-13 cross country and indoor and outdoor track seasons. Kaylee Boyer also returns from a redshirt track season to join Aubrey Bryson, Lakyn Miller and Brandy Petersen, as well as Stone and Vorwaller, on the competing women’s squad.
Following the competition at Idaho State, the Thunderbirds will have a two-week break from competition before splitting between two venues on Sept. 13. One group will head north for the UVU Invitational in Orem, Utah, while the other travels to Riverside, Calif., for the UC Riverside Invitational.
