POCATELLO, Idaho – Aug. 30 – Senior Anthony Brown and sophomore Aubrey Bryson led the Thunderbirds with first-place individual finishes as Southern Utah opened the season at Idaho State. The men’s squad triumphed over the Bengals with a team score of 24 points over ISU’s 31 points, while Southern Utah’s women lost by one point, scoring 28 to the Bengals’ 27.
“Overall, it was a really good showing for us,” head coach Eric Houle said. “These times are on par with our great athletes from previous seasons and to record finishes like that, as young as these squads are, really indicates their levels of talent.”
Freshman Sean Newcomb led the field for nearly half of the men’s 6k before being passed by teammate Brown near the finish line. Brown’s first-place time of 19:15 ranks ninth in SUU’s records for the course, while Newcomb finished second with a time of 19:19. Josh Gardner (19:46), Ibrahim Ahmed (20:04) and Devan Antczak (20:29) rounded out the squad’s score with fifth-, seventh- and 11th-place respective finishes.
Bryson led on the women’s side with a first-place time of 10:53, shaving 27 seconds off her 2012 finish at ISU and ranking 7th in Southern Utah’s records for the course. Morgan Vorwaller (11:01) and Lakyn Miller (11:05.1) followed in fourth and sixth place, while Rachel Stone (11:11) and Kaylee Boyer (11:11.3) rounded out the womens’ score with ninth- and 10th-place consecutive finishes.
SUU Cross Country will be back on the road in two weeks when the teams split between Orem, Utah, and Riverside, Calif., competing in the UVU Invitational on Sept. 13 and UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 14.
