T-Birds Conclude Action at BYU with Semi-final Appearances

PROVO, Utah - Southern Utah University freshman Evgenia (Jane) Marushko advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket in singles and the duo of Madeline Skaras and Afton Staheli advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket in doubles, marking the Thunderbirds best showing at the BYU Invitational over the weekend. Marushko and Veronika Rogova were the only T-Birds to record victories in the main draw before falling into the consolation bracket. Marushko then teamed with Anastasiia Vasileva for Southern Utah's victory in the main draw of doubles.

Marushko posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over BYU's Sydney Monson on the opening day of the tournament, but fell that afternoon to BYU's Desiree Tran, who had a bye in the opening round, in the next match 6-1, 6-3. Rogova posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Wyoming's Alma Espinosa in her first match, but fell to BYU's Nicolette Tran 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday afternoon. Tran had also received a bye in the opening round and her match with Rogova was her only singles match of the day.

Southern Utah's Staheli, Skaras, Alex Ivanova and Vasileva all suffered losses in their opening matches on Thursday, falling 6-4, 7-5; 6-2, 6-2; 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.

Marushko returned to the court on Friday and posted back-to-back wins over BYU's Demi Daniels (6-2, 6-1) and Wyoming's Alma Espinosa (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (14-12)) to advance to the semi-finals. However, the freshman's run ended Saturday morning, falling to Wyoming's Dorottya Jonas (6-4, 2-6, 10-6).

Vasileva, Ivanova and Rogova were all bounced from the consolation bracket with losses to Wyoming's Christa Gecheva (6-3, 6-2), Wyoming's Jonas (6-1, 6-1) and Wyoming's Silviya Zhelyazkova (6-3, 6-1), respectively. Zhelyazkova also eliminated Staheli from the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-3 win the second round.

In doubles, Marushko and Vasileva teamed for Southern Utah's victory in the main draw with an 8-4 win over BYU's team of Daniels and Sydney Monson. The duo dropped their next match and were eventually eliminated from the consolation draw by teammates Skaras and Staheli (8-4), as the later team advanced to the semi-finals with the win.

Southern Utah will return to the courts the first weekend of October when the team travels to the Beach Tennis Fall Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State.
