CEDAR CITY, Utah, 9/28/13 – Visiting Northern Arizona (5-2-3, 1-0-0) scored a goal with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime period to come away with a 3-2 win over Southern Utah (3-7-0, 0-1-0) in the teams’ Big Sky Conference opener on Saturday. The match developed into a back-and-forth contest that saw two ties, three lead changes and nearly two full extra periods.

“I thought that our team had long periods of time when we outplayed them and had more possession of the ball,” stated SUU head coach Becky Hogan. “They had a certain urgency after goals were scored to attack and come right at us. They took advantage of those moments.”

The Thunderbirds opened up the attack early on, outshooting the Lumberjacks in the opening half by a count of 8-2. SUU wouldn’t break through until the 53rd minute however, when senior forward Sabrina Hernandez took a cross from freshman Brianna Brown and fired to the ball into the left side of the net to put SUU out in front 1-0. Northern Arizona answered just moments later as Cierra Gamble and Haley Wingender teamed up for a goal to even the score at 1-1.

Southern Utah went on to retake the lead in the 63rd minute when sophomore Nancy Brich collected a ball played into the box off a corner kick and sent a shot past the NAU keeper. The Lumberjacks rallied again though as Lindsay Doyle sent a deflection into the net for an equalizer just a few minutes later.

“That’s maybe what we need to learn as a young team,” explained Hogan. “Not to be so excited after you score, but realize that they are going to come back ten times as hard.”

The score remained tied at the end of regulation, throughout the first overtime period and most of the second. Nicole Sherwin was then able to find enough space in the middle of the field to fire a shot over the Southern Utah goalkeeper in the 108th minute to deliver the 3-2 win for the Lumberjacks.

SUU finished the match with a 19-13 advantage in the shot column, as well as a 6-4 edge on corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Tessa Christensen played all 108 minutes in goal, recording five saves while allowing three scores. Hernandez and Brich each notched their second goal of the season, while Brianna Brown recorded her first assists.

Southern Utah wraps up its five-game homestand next week with more Big Sky action as Weber State and Idaho State each make visits to SUU. The Thunderbirds and Wildcats square off on Friday at 4:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday meeting with the Bengals at 1:00 p.m. Coverage of SUU soccer is available at
