CEDAR CITY, Utah – Oct. 4 – Southern Utah Cross Country saw competition at home and out-of-state this weekend as the Thunderbirds hosted the Color Country Invitational while also racing at Notre Dame. Utah Valley won the men’s race while tying with Idaho State in the women’s races at Color Country

“It was a tough decision to split the team during the weekend of our home meet,” head coach Eric Houle said. “But it was great to experience a large meet while also giving our younger athletes and redshirts and opportunity to race.”

Unattached athletes Nate Jewkes (19:30.9) and Nik Plum (19:36.5) led the field in the men’s race, followed by Utah Valley’s Jason Lynch (19:42.8). UVU placed first overall, recording a perfect score of 15 in the men’s race. Idaho State and College of Idaho followed with respective scores of 55 and 76, with Dixie State placing fourth with 104 points.

Southern Utah had four men and four women officially race at the home meet, creating two non-scoring squads for visiting teams to race with. Ibrahim Ahmed led the T-Birds in the men’s race, finishing 12th with a time of 20:06.6. Devan Antczak (20:24.9), Clinton (20:36.9) and Josh Gardner (20:45.1) followed in 22nd-, 26th- and 30th-place respectively.

Idaho State’s women dominated the top-three, with Jasmine Nesbitt (15:13.8) and Katie Nicholls (15:20.7) finishing first and third respectively. Utah Valley’s Darian Sharp finished second with a time of 15:17.4. The Wolverines and Bengals tied for first-place team finishes with 28 points each, followed by Dixie State (90) in third and College of Idaho (105) in fourth.

Lakyn Miller led Southern Utah’s women with a sixth-place time of 15:34.9, followed closely by Morgan Vorwaller’s ninth-place finish and time of 15:42.9. Brandy Petersen (16:20.1) and Jasmyn Hildebrandt (16:58.2) also raced for the Thunderbirds, placing 21st and 37th respectively.

SUU will next compete on Oct. 19, when the Thunderbirds travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA Pre-Nationals.
