SUU Volleyball Back at Home, Hosting UND and UNC

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball will wrap up the first leg of its Big Sky Conference slate this weekend when the Thunderbirds host North Dakota and Northern Colorado. The teams will take to the court on Thursday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. in the Centrum Arena.

Scouting North Dakota

North Dakota will enter the match on Thursday night with an overall record of 13-7, including a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. UND has won 12 of its last 13 matches, losing its only match in four sets at South Dakota.

North Dakota is averaging a league-best .262 clip on the floor with 1048 kills (13.8 per set) on 2587 attempts with 371 errors. UND has three players averaging over three kills per set, including Ronni Munkeby (3.12), Lisa Parlich (3.03) and Lexi Robinson (3.00) with the trio also leading the team with 237, 230 and 228 kills, respectively. Nikki Husfeldt leads the team with 771 assists.

Defensively, UND has totaled 1053 digs (13.86 per set) and 191.0 blocks (2.51 per set) on the year. North Dakota’s block is paced by Munkeby with 88 blocks and Parlich with 86 blocks. Lauren Clarke leads the team with 326 digs (4.29 per set) and is also tops on the team with 16 service aces.

North Dakota holds the all-time series lead 4-1 with the home teams taking victories in 2012.

Last Time Against North Dakota

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nov. 17, 2012 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball sent its seniors out with a memorable match on Saturday night, posting a five-set victory over the University of North Dakota on “Senior Night”. The match marked the first time in school history that the Thunderbirds came back from a two-set deficit to post a win.

Mailoto led the Thunderbird attack with 17 kills and added a team-best 21 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. She was followed by Kylie Schofield’s 15 kills and a team-best three solo blocks. Fittingly, Renfro wrapped up her career at Southern Utah with a team-best 10 blocks, part of a school-record 21 blocks for the team during the match. Another senior, Anna Burgess, finished her career with one of her best nights in the Centrum Arena with 17 digs, three assists and Southern Utah’s lone service ace.

Scouting Northern Colorado

Northern Colorado will play at Northern Arizona on Thursday night before making the trip to Cedar City on Saturday. Currently, UNC is 6-12 on the year and 2-6 in the Big Sky. The Bears recently snapped a six-match losing streak with a four-set victory over Eastern Washington last weekend.

Northern Colorado has averaged a .198 clip on the court this season with 846 kills, averaging 12.44 per set. Kendra Cunningham leads the team with 198 kills (2.91 per set) and is followed closely by Brianna Strong with 190 kills (2.79 per set). Ashley Guthrie has directed the UNC attack with a team-best 697 assists.

Defensively, the Bears have totaled 1031 digs (15.16 per set) and 142 blocks (2.10 per set) so far this season. Strong leads the blocks with 78 this season with Merideth Johnson leading the team in digs with 336 (4.94 per set).

Northern Colorado holds the all-time series lead 2-0 after sweeping the Thunderbirds in 2012.

Last Time Against Northern Colorado

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nov. 15, 2012 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball suffered only its second three-set defeat at home this season in a loss to Northern Colorado on Thursday night. The loss doesn’t eliminate the Thunderbirds from a tournament berth, but makes a victory on Saturday night a necessity.

Analaine Mailoto led the Thunderbird attack with 12 kills as Tambre Haddock paced the Bears with 16, hitting .538 (16-2-26).
