Southern Utah (5-10-1, 2-4-1 BSC) finishes up the regular season this week with a road trip to Eastern Washington and the University of Montana. The Thunderbirds will visit the Eagles on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (MT) before taking on the Grizzlies on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. SUU and Montana are long shots to qualify for the upcoming Big Sky Conference Tournament, but both are still mathematically in contention. Live stats for this week’s games will be available at

The Eagles took a 2-1 overtime victory over Sacramento State on Oct. 6 for their only Big Sky win this year. Junior forward Cassie Black leads EWU with four scores, accounting for a third of the team’s total goals. Head coach George Hageage has led Eastern Washington to an overall record of 72-155-20 over the past 14 seasons. Southern Utah dropped a 1-0 contest at home last year to fall to 0-2 all-time against the Eagles.

Montana knocked off Eastern Washington by a 1-0 score last week to pick up its second conference win of the season. Senior defender Maddey Frey leads the team with four goals while Mackenzie Akins ranks first with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Head coach Marko Plakorus is in his third season at Missoula where he holds a record of 23-25-11. The Grizzlies took a 1-0 decision over the Thunderbirds last fall to move the all-time series to 1-0-1 in their favor.

Southern Utah came from behind for a 3-2 win over visiting North Dakota on Friday afternoon. The Thunderbirds trailed 2-1 at the half, and took their first lead on a goal from freshman Shelby Green with less than 60 seconds remaining in regulation. UND scored first, but freshman Katie Jones evened the count at 1-1 in the 25th minute. The visitors retook the lead with a header from Michelle Stingle, but Nancy Brich netted an equalizer in the 70th minute. Green then notched the game winner in the final minute to set the count at 3-2.

Southern Utah took its second overtime loss of the season on Sunday as visiting Northern Colorado got a goal from freshman forward Katherine Day to come away with a 2-1 victory. SUU senior forward Sabrina Hernandez evened the game up with a successful penalty in the closing minutes, but the Bears eventually came out on top thanks to a score off of a deflected free kick in the extra period. Shanlie Anderson and Katherine Day each recorded goals for Northern Colorado.

The top four teams in the conference standings will qualify for the upcoming Big Sky Tournament to be hosted by Portland State, Nov. 7-9. The Vikings are in and have clinched the top-seed. SUU is still in contention for a spot, but needs a pair of wins this weekend along with help from several other teams to qualify.
