Four T-Birds Earn Academic All-District Honors
CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 7 – Four Southern Utah University athletes have earned a spot on the 2013 CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Eight Football squad, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced today.
Cook, a graduate student from Bountiful, Utah (Viewmont HS) carries a 3.66 GPA in business administration. He holds the school’s career field goals record and is the team’s leading scorer with 59 points. He ranks fifth in the nation with 1.6 field goals per game while his field goal percentage of .821 is 21st in the nation.
Meyer, a senior from Boise, Idaho (Capital HS), carries a 3.94 GPA in chemistry. He has started every game for the Thunderbirds at left guard this season after moving from the defensive line – where he was a starter last year – in the spring.
Allphin, a sophomore from Alpine, Utah (Lone Peak HS), carries a 3.90 GPA in biology. He has caught 13 passes for 133 yards this season in a part-time starting role.
Cowser, a sophomore from Fruit Heights, Utah (Davis HS), carries a 3.99 GPA in psychology. He leads the team, is second in the Big Sky and 12th in the nation with 1.5 tackles for loss per game and also ranks among the conference and national leaders in sacks with 6.5 this season. He is tied for third on the team with 53 total tackles, leads the team with six quarterback hurries and co-leads the team with two fumble recoveries.
The team is elected by voting conducted among CoSIDA members in District Eight, which includes schools in Utah, Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai’i, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. To be eligible for the team student-athletes must carry a grade point average of 3.3 (4.0 scale), be a starter or significant reserve and be in at least his second season of competition with the team.
The four Thunderbirds are now in consideration for CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America honors.
