Southern Utah Knocks Off Boise State on the Road
The two sides went back-and-forth early on until sophomore Lori Parkinson hit a jumper to cap a 10-3 run that put Southern Utah out in front 34-21 with five minutes remaining in the opening period.
The Thunderbirds led 44-34 at the break behind 11 first half points and seven rebounds from center Brenna Gates. SUU shot 40 percent from the field in the early going and hit 15 attempts from the foul line to build its ten point lead.
Boise State erased the deficit with a 14-4 rally to start the second half that tied things up at 48-48. Yaiza Rodriguez added a three to put the Broncos up, but SUU came back with three consecutive baskets from Hailey Mandelko, Marissa Robbins and Andrea Jones to go back in front 72-67 with 8:17 left to play.
Things were tight down the stretch as Boise State cut the margin with four-straight free throws by Tonisha Childress, and then tied the game at 82-82 on a layup from Miquelle Askew with less than two minutes remaining.
The Thunderbirds retook control with a score from Robbins who was fouled on a layup and completed the three-point play at the line to put SUU up 85-82. Jackson and Moreland both converted key free throws in the final moments to help Southern Utah eventually come out on top, 90-86.
SUU had seven players score in the double-figures, including all five starters. Jackson’s 17 led the way, followed by Moreland’s 15. Gates and Parkinson both finished with 11 points while Jones, Robbins and Marquelle Funk each had 10. The T-Birds held a 44-41 advantage on the glass and shot 45.8 percent from the field while adding 35 points from the foul line. Askew had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Boise State.
Head coach JR Payne picked up a win against a program where she spent three seasons as an assistant prior to taking over at SUU.
