CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's tennis has been selected fifth in the annual preseason coaches poll with the Thunderbirds appearing at the bottom of the men's poll. Sacramento State was selected first in both polls.

The Thunderbird women are in a familiar spot, having finished fifth in the 2013 final Big Sky Conference standings and advancing to the semi-finals of the conference championship. Southern Utah returns four players from the 2013 squad, including all-conference honorees Alex Ivanova and Veronika Rogova.

Sacramento State picked up 10 first-place votes in the women's poll and was followed by Montana which garnered the only other first-place vote. Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado finished just ahead of SUU in third and fourth, respectively. Montana State, Eastern Washington, Portland State, in-state rival Weber State, Idaho State and North Dakota rounded out the women's poll.

Southern Utah's men will look to continue their building process, entering their second full season as a program. The Thunderbirds took their lumps in 2013, falling in all but one doubles match, but return three players that played in every match last season.

Sacramento State was awarded nine first-place votes on the men's side and was followed by Montana with two first-place votes. Montana State, Weber State, Idaho State and Eastern Washington rounded out spots three through six with Northern Colorado, Northern Arizona, Portland State and North Dakota coming in at seven through 10.

The Thunderbird women will open the 2014 season at Dixie State on Feb. 20, with the men opening their season on March 9 at Sacramento State.
