CEDAR CITY, Jan. 29 – Southern Utah’s women’s golf team has been picked to finish third in the Big Sky’s 2014 preseason coaches poll.

The Thunderbirds received 70 points to finish behind preseason favorite Portland State, which received 10 first-place votes and 100 points, and Sacramento State, which received the other first place vote and 91 points. Portland State and Sacramento State were unanimous choices to finish first and second, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

In fourth place, defending champion Northern Arizona and Montana each received 62 points, with Eastern Washington sixth (60 points) and Weber State seventh (55). Montana State was picked eighth with 36 points, with Northern Colorado (30 points ) ninth, North Dakota  (19 points) 10th and Idaho State (10 points) 11th.

SUU had four players who competed in all five of the team’s fall tournaments on the squad: Monica Jung, Nicole Thomas, Taylor Viquelia and Rynae Baca; while Shantell Spackman competed in all but one tournament in the fall. Jung led the team with a 75.9 stroke average in the fall and had the team’s top finish, fourth at Cal Poly’s Firestone Grill Invitational, one of three top-10 finishes for the junior from Sydney, Australia last semester.
