ST. GEORGE, Utah, Feb. 10 – Sammy Cole and Jake Holt both shot 1-under par 71 Monday to lead Southern Utah to a share of fourth place after the first day of the 2014 Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational, being played at the par 72, 6,802-yard Sunbrook Golf Club.
Cole and Holt were tied in 10th place with three other players, four shots off the lead of Boise State’s Logan France and Utah Valley’s T.J. Timmons, who both came in at 67.
Utah Valley shot 284 to hold the first-day lead, six shots ahead of Seattle University, seven better than Boise State and eight shots up on Southern Utah and Dixie State, who were tied for fourth.
Utah State shot 297 to sit sixth heading into Tuesday’s final round, followed by Weber State (302), Cal State Northridge (303), Oral Roberts (308) and North Dakota (310).
Rounding out the SUU entry, Nic Booth shot 74 to sit 21stwith Tim Leonard 29th at 76 and Taylor Schone, who was playing in his first tournament of the season after sitting out the fall, 54th at 80.
The tournament wraps up with the final round beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
