SUU Gymnastics Looking to Continue Upward Climb

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University gymnastics’ steady climb this season continues on Friday night when the Thunderbirds host the University of Denver in the Centrum Arena. The T-Birds have scored a season high in each of their meets this season and will look to continue that trend when the meet begins at 7:00 p.m.
The competition is the second of three back-to-back meets for the T-Birds as the team began the stretch with a road/home meet against Boise State, splitting the results. SUU will face BYU next week in Provo on Feb. 21 and in Cedar City on Feb. 24. Southern Utah finished a close second last week in Denver with a season-high 195.700 to Denver’s 196.050.

Breast Cancer Awareness Meet
This Friday’s meet will also coincide with SUU Gymnastics annual Breast Cancer Awareness meet. SUU will donate $1 of every ticket sold this Friday to the Intermountain Cancer Research Center.

Last time against Denver/Last Week
DENVER, Colo. - SUU continued to improve upon its season high, scoring a 195.700 to finish second at the University of Denver on Saturday night. The mark included three season highs on vault, bars and beam as the Thunderbirds finished behind Denver (196.050) and ahead of North Carolina State (194.250).
Denver slipped one spot in the national rankings, coming in at No. 18 this week after a No. 17 ranking last week. The Pioneers have averaged a 195.685 this season with averages of 48.980 on vault, 48.865 on bars, 48.830 on beam and a 49.010 on floor.
Individually, Moriah Martin leads the team on vault (9.885) and bars (9.885), Ellese Sakai-Hart is tops on beam (9.800) and Nina McGee leads the team on floor with a 9.894 season average.
SUU gymnasts have captured at least one individual title in each competition this season. Senior Alyssa Click and freshman Memory Shettles lead the way with three apiece.
