Thunderbird Women Open BSC Play this Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s tennis will open its 2014 Big Sky conference slate this weekend, visiting Portland State and Sacramento State on Friday and Saturday.

The Thunderbirds will be looking to snap a two-match losing streak, having suffered back-to-back losses on the road at San Franciso and San Jose State earlier in the week.

SUU is scheduled to take to the courts at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Results for both matches will be available online at

Scouting Portland State

Portland State will enter the match on Friday with an overall record of 4-4, including a 2-2 mark in Big Sky conference play. The Vikings’ wins this season have come against Seattle (4-3), Northern Arizona (6-1), Nebraska Omaha (6-1) and North Dakota (4-3).

Southern Utah posted a 5-2 victory over Portland State last season when the teams met in Cedar City. PSU’s points came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

Scouting Sacramento State

Sacramento State will enter Saturday’s match with an overall record of 1-7 with its only victory coming against UTEP. The Hornets will also be hosting Weber State on Saturday, following the match with Southern Utah.

CSUS picked up the victory in Cedar City last season 6-1 with the Thunderbirds capturing their point at No. 3 singles.
