CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University gymnastics will compete for the first ever Mountain Rim Gymnastics championship this weekend when the Thunderbirds travel to Provo, Utah on Saturday. SUU will face Boise State, Utah State, BYU and the University of Denver for the chance to lift the trophy, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (MT).
The Thunderbirds posted victories over each MRGC school during the year, with the exception of Utah State which swept SUU in the regular season for the first time since 2004.
Southern Utah will still enter the championships as an underdog, ranked No. 4 in the alliance in team RQS with a 195.580. Boise State is first with a 196.200, Denver second with a 196.020, BYU third with a 195.675 and Utah State fifth with a 195.250.

LOGAN, Utah - SUU gymnastics captured three individual titles, but fell to Utah State on Friday night as the Aggies scored a season-high 196.000 to the Thunderbirds’ 195.550.

CEDAR CITY, Utah - March 23, 2013 - SUU recorded career-best marks on the first and final routine of the night as the Thunderbirds finished fifth at the Western Athletic Conference Gymnastics Championship on Saturday night with a 194.925.
Scouting the championship field
The Mountain Gim Gymnastics championship will include five top-32 teams, including Boise State (17), Denver (20), BYU (25), Southern Utah (29) and Utah State (32).
Individually, the University of Denver’s Moriah Martin and Jorie Hall lead the alliance on vault and beam with regional qualifying scores of 9.895 and 9.845, respectively. Boise State’s Ciera Perkins leads the MRGC on bars and floor with a regional qualifying score of 9.890 and 9.895, respectively. DU’s Martin is also tops in the all-around with a regional qualifying score of 39.335.
