CEDAR CITY, Utah, May 7 – The Southern Utah softball team had a total of nine players recognized in the Big Sky Conference end of year awards announced on Wednesday. Sophomore outfielder Kylee Wolf headlined the group by earning a spot on the all-conference first team for the second consecutive season, while junior catcher Lyndsey Healey was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Healey was joined on the second team by SUU infielder Meagan Neilson, while Thunderbirds Madison Resley, Kadi Henderson, Sara Park, Ariel Hart, Katie Greenberg and Tanisha Anderson were among the student-athletes who received honorable mention.

Wolf followed up her breakout freshman season with an equally impressive sophomore campaign by batting .433 in conference play with three doubles, five home runs and a team-best 21 RBI. She went a perfect 18-18 on stolen base attempts to record the sixth-highest single-season total in SUU history. The Spanish Fork, Utah native scored a total of 45 runs on the year and finished second on the team with eight homers as well as second in the Big Sky with 64 overall hits. Wolf finished among the conference leaders in nearly every offensive category.

Healey came on during the Big Sky season, posting the conference’s third-highest batting average at .447, while collecting five doubles and a home run. The Thunderbird catcher swiped three bags on the base paths and allowed opponents to steal just five times. Another Spanish Fork softball player, Healey drove in a total of 25 runs and scored 23 more. She came up with 43 hits for Southern Utah, including nine doubles. Healey became the second SUU player to receive the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year award, following last year’s recipient Hart, who is another Salt Lake Community College transfer.

Neilson also turned in an outstanding performance in conference play, batting .395 with a pair of doubles and home runs. The second baseman from Harrisville, Utah drove in 21 runs during the year and homered four times. She also scored 20 runs and hit a total of four doubles.

SUU first baseman Madison Resley hit a team-best .389 on the year with a mark of .320 in conference play to earn honorable mention recognition. She led the Thunderbirds with a total of 10 home runs and 42 RBI. Henderson followed close behind with 34 runs driven in on seven homers while hitting .288 at the plate. Park batted .321 and scored 18 runs from the lead-off spot and Anderson recorded three stolen bases and 10 runs for Southern Utah.

Hart finished second in the league with a total of six victories from the circle and ranked fifth in Big Sky play by recording 25 strikeouts. Greenberg led the conference with a pair of saves, struck out 23 batters and held opponents to a .295 batting average.

Idaho State shortstop Hailey Breakwell hit .444 with 15 RBI and five home runs in conference on her way to being named the Big Sky Player of the Year while Bengal outfielder Kacie Burnett was a unanimous selection as the Freshman of the Year after collecting five doubles and 18 runs scored on a .397 batting average. Caitlin Brooks compiled five wins on a 1.62 ERA and struck out 45 batters for Sacramento State to earn recognition as the Pitcher of the Year.

The majority of the all-conference honorees will put their talents on display this week at the Big Sky Tournament. Event host Idaho State will open play by taking on Northern Colorado on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. followed by a matchup between Southern Utah and Sacramento State at 4:00 p.m. Tournament coverage will be available at www.suutbirds.com or www.bigskyconf.com
