LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 16 – Southern Utah (23-30) dropped an 8-0 decision to UCLA (49-6) in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals on Friday. The Thunderbirds fell behind early after surrendering four runs in the first inning, but didn’t allow more than a single score in a frame for the remainder of the game.
Stephany LaRosa started the scoring for the Bruins with an RBI single through the left side and came around to score after Gabrielle Maurice doubled to left center. Alyssa Tiumalu brought in the next two scores with home run to deep center. An SUU error in the following inning allowed UCLA to extend the advantage to 5-0.
Southern Utah threatened after Tanisha Anderson led off the third with a walk and Kelli Hales singled through the right side for the Thunderbirds’ lone hit of the day. UCLA was able to come up with three straight outs however to keep SUU off the scoreboard.
Delaney Spaulding scored from third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to add a run to Bruin lead. Another T-Bird miscue in the following inning brought a seventh run, but a diving catch in right field by Sara Park, and a throw to first to double up the runner, got SUU out of the inning still trailing 7-0.
UCLA would clinch the win with a walk-off RBI single from Mysha Sataraka in the bottom of the sixth that set the final count at 8-0.
Katie Greenberg (7-8) tossed all six inning for the Thunderbirds, allowing six earned runs on nine hits. She also struck out three batters and issued three walks.
Ally Carda pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts before being relieved by Jessica Hall (16-2) who closed out the final three frames with three more K’s to take the win.
Up next for the Thunderbirds is an elimination game against Long Beach State. The 49ers also dropped their opening round contest by a score of 8-0 to No. 20 Notre Dame. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (MT) with coverage on www.suutbirds.com and ESPN3.
