POCATELLO, Idaho - Southern Utah University cross country opened its season on Friday morning with the men finishing first and the women second in a head-to-head meet at Idaho State.
SUU captured the top three spots in the men's 6k race with Shinano Miyazawa finishing first with a time of 19:05.08, fifth-best in school history on the ISU course. Skylar Riggs and freshman Matt Wright followed, crossing the finish line in second and third with times of 19:13.06 and 19.28.73, respectively. Eric Sandall and Colin Arave were next for the Thunderbirds, finishing sixth and seventh after finishing the course in 19:58.93 and 19:59.41, respectively. Robby Lee rounded out the results for the T-Birds with an 11th-place time of 20:19.51.
On the women's side, Idaho State captured seven of the top nine spots in the 3k race. Josie Brandow recorded the top finish for the Thunderbird women, crossing the line in fourth-place with a time of 10:39.40, the fourth-fastest mark in school history on the ISU course. Sierra Malm followed with a sixth-place performance of 11:11.28. The Thunderbirds then had a block finish 10 through 13 as Ashley Tyndall (11:16.25), Sharlie Dimick (11:19.57), Angie Nickerson (11:23.68) and Kaylee Boyer (11:35.68) made up the pack. Regan Pond was the final finisher for the Thunderbirds, crossing the line in 15th with a time of 11:37.86.
The individual finishes led to a 30-61 victory for the men and a 35-70 defeat on the women's side. The cross country team will be back in action in two weeks when the Thunderbirds split between the UVU Invitational and the UC Riverside meet on Sept. 13.
