Analaine Pelaez Named Summit League Freshman of the Year

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nov. 20 - Analaine Pelaez garnered the first postseason honor for Southern Utah women's volleyball as the redshirt freshman was named the 2009 Summit League Freshman of the Year while also picking up first-team and all-freshman accolades for her performance during the first season of volleyball on the campus of SUU in more than 20 years.

Pelaez finished the year leading the conference in kills per set (4.29) and was fifth in the league in service aces per set (0.29).  She was tops on the team in several categories, including total attempts (1410), kills (468), kills per set (4.29), aces (31) and aces per set (0.29).  Pelaez also finished second on the team in digs with 303 and led the team with 15 double-doubles during the year.

"I'm extremely happy for Ana," head coach Debby Baker said.  "We talked about her becoming the conference freshman of the year when we recruited her and I'm proud of her for achieving that goal."

Pelaez was the only freshman to collect all-conference honors, earning first-team accolades with three seniors, one junior and two sophomores.

Southern Utah finished its first season with an overall mark of 9-20, finishing the conference season in eighth place after a 7-11 run in Summit League play.
