SUU Women's Tennis Opens at Fullerton Intercollegiates

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s tennis will open its fall season this weekend when the team travels to Fullerton, California to compete at the Fullerton Intercollegiates. The event will feature three flights of singles and two flights of doubles.

“This tournament will have some great competition for our athletes,” head coach Lenny Lee said. “It will be good to get out on the court and hit against somebody other than our own team.”

All-conference performers Olya Tatarchenko and Alex Ivanova will appear in Flight A, with Tatarchenko drawing a bye in her opening match and Ivanova facing CS Northridge’s Sabrina Man-Song Hing. Freshman Madeline Skaras will face CSLA’s Tiffany Shaik in her opening match in Flight B with the winner advancing to face Fullerton’s Kalika Slevcove.

Afton Staheli, playing in singles Flight C, will face CSLA’s Nikkola Wichenko with the winner advancing to play in the quarterfinals. Staheli and Skaras will appear in the Flight B of doubles, playing UC Santa Barbara’s team of Yam and Cano. Tatarchenko and Ivanova, appearing in Flight A of doubles will open with Fulleton’s team of Mai and Rodriquez.

First and second round matches will be played on Friday, with quarterfinal and semi-final matches on Saturday leading up to the finals on Sunday morning.

Senior Olya Tatarchenko finished 2012 on a 12-match winning streak in singles.

On the Summit, Undefeated

Olya Tatarchenko went undefeated in singles in Summit League play in 2012 (7-0) and paired with Alex Ivanova to go undefeated at No. 1 doubles in conference (7-0).

All-Conference Performers

Olya Tatarchenko is a two-time all-Summit League honoree.

Alex Ivanova picked up Summit League Freshman of the Year honors in 2011 and all-Summit League accolades in 2012.

From the Summit to the Sky

Southern Utah University will move into the Big Sky Conference this season after having competed in the Summit League since the 1997 season.
