CEDAR CITY, Feb. 6, 2013 – Southern Utah University has received commitments from 24 football players during the 2012-13 signing periods, Thunderbird head coach Ed Lamb announced Wednesday.

“Our 2013 signing class represents a banner year for us in recruiting the Utah high schools,” Lamb said. “The talent and character of the in-state prospects this year blew me away.

“I’m so appreciative of all the help that we received from the Utah high school coaches. As needed, we also supplemented our class with a few excellent signees from out of state,” he continued. “I can’t wait to get all these great young men on campus!”

The list includes 22 players from the high school ranks, including 18 from Utah, two from California and one from Colorado and Arizona. In addition to the prep signees the list includes one Division I transfer and one junior college transfer who signed during the early period.

SUU signed four local products, including two each from Desert Hills and Pine View High Schools. Signing from Desert Hills were 3A first-team all-state quarterback Ty Rutledge and offensive lineman Josh Anderson, while Pine View defensive linemen Weslee Moeai (another first-team all-stater) and Wesley Kauvaka, son of former SUU fullback Wilson Kauvaka, also committed to the Thunderbirds.

In addition to Kauvaka the Thunderbirds signed another player with a family tie to the team, as Zach Larsen, the younger brother of SUU all-American defensive tackle Cody Larsen and another first-team all-stater, signed with the Thunderbirds out of Jordan High School.

SUU signed three players from Kearns High School, brothers Lehi and Toa Afatasi and  first-team all-state running back James Felila. Lehi Afatasi is a defensive lineman who will graduate from KHS this spring while Toa is a fullback who has recently returned from an LDS church mission to the Dominican Republic.

The Thunderbirds also received commitments from Chinedu Ahanonu, an honorable mention all-state linebacker from West Jordan High; Greg Aspinal, a second-team all-state fullback from Timpview High; Dorien Banks, a linebacker from Cottonwood High; and Pat Baker, a second-team all-state selection at linebacker from South Sevier High.

Wrapping up the list of signees from Utah, Malcolm Card-Turner, a first-team all-state selection at wide receiver from Salt Lake City’s Highland High also signed with the Thunderbirds, as did defensive lineman Collin Greenhill, a second-team all-stater from Layton Christian. P.J. Nu’usa, a second-team all-state offensive lineman from East High; Junior Vailolo, an honorable mention all-state linebacker from Woods Cross; Mason Woodward, a first-team all-region five linebacker from Syracuse; and Sialao Mobley, a first-team all-Region seven linebacker from Herriman.

The prep signees from California are Dashaun Cosby, a defensive lineman from Oakland-area Tennyson High; and Tyler Fenton a first-team all-CIF prep league quarterback from The Webb School.

Signing from Colorado was Pete Williams, an honorable mention all-state running back from Denver South High and from Arizona was Chandler Dowell, a long snapper from Desert Vista High where he earned his school’s scholar athlete award.

SUU also received a commitment from offensive lineman Daniel Fleischman, who will join the Thunderbirds after leaving the program at Wyoming.

During the early signing period SUU inked quarterback Aaron Cantu out of East Los Angeles College. Cantu led the NJCAA with 3,358 passing yards last year.
