CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Thunderbirds fell to the Idaho State Vandals in their Senior Game and final Big Sky regular game in the Centrum Arena, 75-84.
Randy Onwuasor led the Thunderbirds in the loss with 17 points and four assists. Three other Thunderbirds finished in double-digits, including Race Parsons with 15, James McGee with 14, and John Marshall with 13.
Parsons led the game from beyond the arch, finishing 3 of 5. Will Joyce led on the boards, pulling in eight rebounds.
The T-Birds launched the game with a quick 11-7 lead over the Vandals before the game knotted at 15s. Idaho then passed the Thunderbirds to capture a 37-29 halftime edge.
SUU topped off a rally with a trey from Marshall to take a one-point lead over the Vandals to begin the second half before Idaho regained their lead for a 53-49 advantage with just under eight minutes to play.
The Vandals held to their lead to wrap up the game with an 84-75 victory.
Despite the loss, Parsons and the rest of the senior class said the team played hard and for each other.
“Tonight was amazing. The team worked hard for themselves and for us, and we felt that tonight. We could feel it in the locker room even before the game,” Parsons said. “Everyone is playing for each other.”
The Thunderbirds tip off their first game of the Big Sky Tournament in Reno, Nevada with Montana State on Tuesday, March 7, at 8:05 p.m. PST.
“We’re prepared for it even though we had rough conference (play). We’re ready. Everyone is going in 0-0,” Will Joyce said of the Big Sky Championships. “Records don’t matter anymore.”
