CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team opened their 2017 home season Thursday afternoon with a rematch against the Utah State Aggies. The last time these two teams met the Aggies pulled out a 3-1 comeback win over the Thunderbirds. Thursday’s matchup was a whole different ballgame.
The Aggies opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff batter Jazmine Clarke singled to right field, stole second base, and was brought home by a Victoria Saucedo RBI single two batters later. They would go on to plate at least one run in every inning including two solo home runs and a four-run sixth inning to put the Thunderbirds away with a score of 12-1.
The Thunderbirds struggled offensively, collecting just three hits and working just one walk. They scored their only run of the game in the fourth inning when Sarah Murphy led off the inning with a bloop double to right field. She moved to third base on a wild pitch from Aggie pitcher Kellie White and was brought home to score on a RBI single to left center by Payton Hart.
White started the game in the circle for the Aggies, pitching five innings and allowing just three hits and one run while striking out three Thunderbirds. Pitching duties for the Thunderbirds were split between starting pitcher Hanna Wynn and relief pitcher Cheyenne Cudahy. Wynn lasted just three innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Cudahy came in to relieve Wynn in the fourth inning. She worked three innings as well, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in her time in the circle.
The Beehive Classic will continue tomorrow with the Aggies and Wagner College kicking things off at 10:00 a.m. The Thunderbirds will play the Seahawks at 3:00 p.m. in their second game of the tournament.
