CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team hosted the No. 20 BYU Cougars Tuesday and despite their best efforts, the Thunderbirds fell to the Cougars 13-3 in five innings.

The Cougars scored early and often in this one. Third baseman Caitlyn Alldredge got BYU on the board first with a two-run shot left center in the first inning to make it 2-0. They would add four more runs in the top of the second inning as Alldredge hit her second home run of the game and McKenzie St. Clair hit a leadoff solo shot to left.

The Thunderbirds scored all of their runs in the second inning. After a leadoff walk and singles from first baseman Megan Reed and catcher Hannah Williams to load the bases, junior Kaitlin Williams came to the plate in a pinch hitting situation. Williams laced the 1-0 pitch from Arissa Paulson in the gap in right center for a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to make it 6-3 Cougars.

The Cougars answered back with two runs in the third and five in the fourth making it 13-3 in the fourth inning. The Thunderbirds were only able to pick up one more hit after the second inning, a Hannah Williams infield single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Thunderbirds used three pitchers in the loss. Sophomore Cheyenne Cudahy had the best outing of three, giving up just two hits and one run in 1.2 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Kirsten Hostetler was tagged with the loss, making her 5-6 on the season.

In just the second start of her career, Hannah Williams went two for two with two singles and a run scored. Senior Megan Reed extended her hitting streak to five games, going one for two at the plate with a single and a run scored.

Tuesday’s game was the first game in a home and away series between the two teams. The Thunderbirds will make the trip to Provo next Wednesday for the final game in the series.

Coming Up Next

The Thunderbirds will take a few days off from play before hosting Big Sky opponent Idaho State for a three-game series this weekend. The series will start with a doubleheader on Friday April 14th with the final game of the series taking place on Saturday April 15th.
