Jayson Kovar Set To Fight For National Championship In The Discus
By SUU Strategic Communication
CEDAR CITY, Utah - This week Southern Utah University senior Jayson Kovar will have one more opportunity to don a Thunderbird singlet, as he will compete in the discus at the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon. He will be competing Friday evening at 6:05 p.m. Mountain Time.
Last Time Out
Kovar stole the show for the Thunderbirds at NCAA West Prelims in Austin, Texas, as he finished fourth overall in the discus throw with a season best of 191' 2''.
Kovar was in the third of three flights, and topped every throw in the first two flights with his first attempt. He hit his high mark with his third and final throw.
He finished fourth behind Reno Tuufuli from Iowa (203' 7''), Nicholas Percy from Nebraska (201') and Mitchell Cooper from Kansas (193' 4''). Oregon's Ryan Hunter-Simms rounded out the top five with a throw of 187' 2''.
Back To Track Town
When Kovar returns to Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon, it will be his second year in a row doing so.
Last season Kovar earned the title of Second Team All-American, finishing in ninth place. His furthest throw in the meet was a 189' 6'' that he hit in the opening flight.
Kovar owns the school record in the discus, which was set in 2016 at 193' 6''.
The senior from Ridgecrest, California has shown a lot of improvement in his years as a Thunderbird.
As a freshman in 2013 he threw a personal best of 171' 3'', and was able to bump that up to 180' 9'' as a sophomore. He set his collegiate PR as a junior after a year of redshirting.
Recent Nationals History
The Thunderbirds have had a lot of success on the National Championship stage in the past several years.
In 2015 the Thunderbirds were represented by two athletes, Kovar's sister Kayla and distance runner Nate Jewkes. For both of them that was their second trip to the National Championships.
In 2012 Cam Levins claimed a pair of National Championships, winning both the 10K and 5K in Oregon.
ESPN Family of Networks
Those wanting to watch Kovar compete this Friday will be able to do so on ESPN3 at 5:55 p.m. Mountain Time (4:55 local time). The entirety of the 2017 Outdoor Championships will be broadcast across the ESPN family of networks.
