OGDEN, Utah, April 20 – Southern Utah built an early lead before claiming a 7-2 victory to take three straight wins at Weber State on Saturday. The Thunderbirds picked up their first series sweep in conference play this year to improve to 8-4 in the Big Sky to go along with an overall mark of 16-26. The Wildcats fall to 3-11 and 8-30.

“Today we used one big hit to get the win, where in the other two games we just outslugged them,” explained SUU head coach Kyle Magnusson. “We held them to two runs in each game, and when you can do that you are going to win most of the time.”

That hit came in the top of the second after the T-Birds put two runners on when Madison Resley reached on an error and Katie Olinger drew a base on balls. Ariel Morbeck then snuck a fly ball just over the fence in left field for her first career home run to put SUU out in front 3-0.

Southern Utah went on to plate four more runs in the fourth inning. The Thunderbirds loaded up the bases before Morbeck, Meagan Neilson and Kelsey Bryant each reached home on three separate wild pitches. The game was then suspended for a 42-minute rain delay, after which Cora Cordova brought in another run with a sacrifice fly to stretch the margin to 7-0.

The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the frame with an run-scoring sac fly from Morgan Allaband followed by an RBI single hit back up the middle by Rudi Barrios to pull back to within 7-2.

Ariel Zimmerman (10-15) shut down the Wildcats over the next two innings to pick up her second win of the weekend before Danielle Axe closed out the game with a perfect final frame. The SUU starter gave up just two runs on eight hits while striking out four batters during six innings in the circle. Jasmine Ioane (0-8) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on four hits in just over three innings.

“Z (Zimmerman) was great for us today,” stated Magnusson. “She had six strikeouts in six innings without giving up a walk.”

The Thunderbirds will host five home games next week, starting with a doubleheader against the University of Utah on Wednesday at Noon. SUU then closes out its Big Sky season with a series versus Northern Colorado on Friday and Saturday. Coverage of the games is available on
