TULSA,
Okla., April 23 - Top-seeded IPFW got wins at second, fifth and sixth
singles as well in doubles in the semi-finals of The Summit League Women's
Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon to put an end to Southern Utah's 2010 season.
The
Mastodons got wins at first and third doubles, with Amy Recht and Ingrid Ballus
taking an 8-1 win ove Ksusha Nazarova and Olia Tatarchenko at No. 1 doubles
while Yuka Kobayashi and Raquel Vescovi got past Kristi Latteier and Mandie Divino by the same count at No. 3 to take the point. IPFW's Katie Brien and
Alex Forsyth led Kirrily Burden and Carmen Blanco 4-2 at No. 2 when the point
was decided and the match was abandoned.
Ballus
then claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tatarchenko at No. 2 singles while Forsyth got
past Latteier 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Kobayashi claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Divino at No. 6 to wrap up the win and end the match.
Nazarova
handed Recht just her second set loss ever in Summit League play, taking a 7-5
win in the first set before Recht bounced back with a 6-0 win in the second
set, which is where the No. singles match stood when play ended.Vescovi led
Burden 6-4, 2-2 at No. 3 while Brien was up on Blanco 7-5, 1-1, at No. 4.
"I'm
happy with the way we played today," SUU Coach Lenny Lee said. "Our girls played
hard and we were right there in the singles matches. If we had been able to win
that doubles point we may have given them a scare but they took care of
business in doubles, got that edge heading into singles, and did what they
needed to do in doubles."
In
the other semi-final match second seed Oral Roberts got past UMKC by a 4-0
count. IPFW and ORU face off Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Mountain Racquet
Club for the championship.
