CEDAR CITY, Utah – March 16, Southern Utah snapped an eight-game losing skid with a 20-11 victory over Northern Colorado on Friday. The Thunderbirds erupted for 13 runs in the fourth inning and then never looked back on their way to their first win since taking an 11-5 decision at Hawaii-Pacific two weeks ago. The triumph helps SUU to get back in the win column with a record of 3-14 while the Bears drop to 4-8.

Justin Neubauer got the start on the mound for the Thunderbirds, and after allowing two runs in the top of the first, the junior southpaw settled in to cruise through four scoreless innings earn the win and move to 2-1 on the year.  The Bears broke through in the opening inning with a pair of RBI singles from Adam Hilker and Harrison Lambert for an early 2-0 advantage. Southern Utah came back to even the game after Bo Cuthbertson drove in a run in the bottom half of the frame and he and Brad Royer collected back-to-back doubles in the fourth.

The fourth inning would then see Southern Utah pull away as the Thunderbirds posted 13 runs on nine hits in the frame. SUU loaded the bases after Micah Keeno walked and Taggart Lunceford and Ronnie Burton Jr. both singled. Royer then drove a ball through the left infield to plate the first two runs of the inning. Cuthbertson followed with a two-run RBI triple and later scored as Brsyon Kenolio singled through the left side. Another hit by Kevin Kline would then once again load the bases before David Headley and Lunceford each drove in a run. A passed ball then advanced the runners and allowed SUU to pick up a run before another walk for Keeno loaded the bases for the third time in the frame. Royer added one more RBI with an infield single which was followed by a base-clearing triple driven down the right field line by Cuthbertson. The SUU shortstop later came home on a wild pitch to set the score at 15-2.

Southern Utah added to the lead with five more runs over the next two innings, while the Bears were able to narrow the margin with four runs in the sixth and another five in the fifth to set the final count at 20-11.

Both teams tallied 18 hits in the slugfest, but Northern Colorado committed five errors and gave up six bases-on-balls while SUU was perfect in the field and issued just one walk.

Brooks Schneider drove in three runs to lead the Bears, who also got two RBI from Jensen Park and Tony Crudo. Brad Royer drove in three runs on four hits for the Thunderbirds while Bo Cuthbertson was an impressive 4-for-5 at the plate with seven RBI.

Southern Utah will wrap up its three-game series with Northern Colorado this Saturday. The start time for the game has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to weather concerns.
