CEDAR CITY, Utah, Oct. 17 – The Big Sky Conference released its pre-season men’s basketball polls today and expectations are for a rebuilding year for Southern Utah as the Thunderbirds have been picked to finish 10th by the writers and 11th by the coaches.

SUU, which lost it’s top two scorers and seven total letter-winners from last season’s Big Sky tournament team, garnered 92 points from the media to finish between Portland State (116 points) and Idaho State (65 points) and had 18 coaches points to finish just behind Idaho State (22 points).

Weber State was the overwhelming favorite to finish atop the pack, with 31 of 34 first place votes from the media and 10 of 11 of the coaches’ top picks, but the polls differed somewhat the rest of the way down the list, with Montana picked second by the media (with three first-place votes) and third by the coaches (with the other first-place vote) while North Dakota was tabbed third by the media and second by the coaches.

Northern Colorado was fourth in both polls, followed by Montana State and Eastern Washington in the media poll while the coaches had Eastern Washington fifth and Montana State sixth.

The coaches then had Sacramento State, Portland State and Northern Arizona picked seventh through ninth, followed by Idaho State and SUU.

The media predicted Northern Arizona would finish seventh, followed by Sacramento State, Portland State, SUU and Idaho State.
