CEDAR CITY, Utah, May 13 – Southern Utah University’s men’s basketball program has added another name to its 2014 spring signing list late Monday as Christian Thompson, a forward from Tohono O’odham Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Thunderbirds, SUU head coach Nick Robinson announced today.
"We are excited to welcome Christian to the Thunderbird family," Robinson said. "He brings additional versatility to our team after two successful seasons under coach Matt Vargas and is a great addition to our 2014 recruiting class."
Thompson, a 6-foot-7 combo forward from Phoenix, Ariz. (Arcadia High School), averaged 16.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.6 blocks per game last year for Coach Matthew Vargas’ Jegos. A first-team all-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division 2 and an overall all-ACCAC second team honoree in 2014, Thompson helped lead TOCC to a 19-13 overall record, including a 15-8 mark and a fourth-place finish in league play. The Jegos ultimately advanced to the NJCAA Region One finals where their season ended in a loss to eventual national champion Phoenix College.
Southern Utah “seemed like the place for me,” Thompson said. “When I came on my visit I felt like I fit in with the program and what they’re trying to accomplish, plus it’s a beautiful campus, a nice town and its close to home. I also love the coaches, they’re one of the main reasons I want to come to Southern Utah. I can’t wait to get there and start working.”
"Christian Thompson was our first big recruit here at Tohono O'odham Community College … we knew he was a special individual on and off the court,” Vargas said. “Chris is a very unique player. He is an offensive nightmare for opposing defenses. He excels in the open floor and is one of the best weak side shot blockers I've ever seen. Our staff, school administration and community are excited that he chose to attend Southern Utah University. Head Coach Nick Robinson and his staff have been wonderful throughout the recruitment process. We appreciate the time and effort they spent with our student-athlete."
Thompson joins wings Jeff Nibo from Chaffey (Calif.) College and Sherron Wilson from Las Vegas Clark High School as the Thunderbirds' three spring signees.
