LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sept 28 – SUU Cross Country spent another weekend on the road as both the men and women raced at the UNLV Invitational on Saturday, taking on the Rebels as well as Dixie State. The women recorded a perfect score of 15 in the 5k, taking all of the first ten finishing positions. The Southern Utah men also comprised the bulk of the top-ten finishers in the men’s 5k, recording a near-perfect score of 17.
“This was a great meet for us in that we were able to work on a few things that we wouldn’t be able to in a larger meet,” head coach Eric Houle said. “The squads were really able to focus on running as a pack and really being aware of where their teammates are.”
Both the A- and B- squads raced on the women’s side, with Shelli Mogensen leading the pack with a first-place time of 18:14.27. Dayna VanArsdol and Aubrey Bryson followed close behind, recording second- and third-place times of 18:17.54 and 18:21.21 respectively. Rachel Stone and Kaylee Boyer crossed the finish line next, placing fourth and fifth and rounding out the women’s score with respective times of 18:27.39 and 18:34.80. Five more Thunderbird women came next as Josie Brandow, Sierra Malm, Morgan Vorwaller, Lakyn Miller and Brandy Petersen crossed the finish line.
Southern Utah’s women led the meet with a first-place team score of 15, followed by UNLV in second place with 59 points and Dixie State in third with 68 points.
The men’s B-squad also raced at the UNLV meet, with John Hart leading the T-Birds with a first-place time of 15:16.73. Skylar Riggs finished next, recording a second-place time of 15:21.75 while Ibrahim Ahmed followed in third place with a time of 15:32.85. Jon Lee and Devan Antczak tallied the rest of the men’s points with fifth- and sixth-place respective times of 15:40.04 and 15:51.29.
Sean Newcomb, Josh Gardner, Clinton Rhoton and James Leblow also recorded top-ten finishes, helping the Thunderbirds to a win with 17 points over Dixie State’s 63 points.
SUU Cross Country will now prepare to play host as the Thunderbirds prepare to host the annual Color Country Invitational next weekend. Set to take place on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (MT), the meet will be held at Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City. Southern Utah will also be represented at an out-of-state meet as a small group of T-Birds travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Adidas Notre Dame Invitational, which is also slated for Friday.
