SUU Volleyball to Play Three Matches in Four Days

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball will play three matches in four days as the T-Birds travel to Idaho State on Friday, Weber State on Saturday and Utah Valley on Monday. SUU’s conference matches with ISU and WSU are set for 7:00 p.m. with the match at UVU slated for 6:00 p.m.

Southern Utah will be looking for a season sweep against Weber State, having recorded a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats in Cedar City earlier this season. A win in Ogden would mark the seventh consecutive victory over Weber State for the Thunderbirds. SUU could also post its second victory over Utah Valley in as many meetings with a win in Orem, having taken the 2012 contest in straight sets.

Scouting Idaho State

Idaho State will enter the match on Friday night with an overall record of 13-8, including a 7-3 mark in the Big Sky. The Bengals have won five of their last six matches, falling only to North Dakota in four sets on the road.

Offensively, ISU has hit .218 with 1,002 kills, averaging 13.36 per set. Individually, Tressa Lyman leads the team with 255 kills, averaging 3.54 per set. Lori Mendenhall-Lee has directed the Bengal attack, recording a team-best 762 assists. Mendenhall-Lee is also tied for the team lead in service aces with 22.

Defensively, Idaho State has totaled 157 blocks (2.09 per set) and 1049 digs (13.99 per set). Makenzie Filer paces the block with 73 (12 BS, 61 BA) and Kylee Sessions leads the team in digs with 249.

Idaho State holds a 3-0 advantage over Southern Utah since the return of the program in 2008.

Last Time Against Idaho State

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Sept. 21, 2013 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball had a better hitting percentage and more blocks, but couldn’t overcome big opening runs by Idaho State, falling to the Bengals 3-0 at home on Saturday night.

Freshman Ann Clappier, a Pocatello, Idaho native, led the Thunderbirds offensively for the first time in 2013 with eight kills and finished third on the team with six blocks. Taylor Heine led the T-Bird block for the second consecutive match with nine (1 BS, 8 BA) and was followed closely by Annie Stradling with eight (1 BS, 7 BA) as the team finished with a season-high 17. Sariah Pelaez led the team with 11 digs.

Scouting Weber State

Weber State will host Northern Arizona on Thursday night before welcoming Southern Utah to Ogden on Saturday. The Wildcats are currently 5-19 on the year and tied with SUU with a 1-9 record in the Big Sky Conference.

Weber State’s offense has totaled 961 kills this season while hitting .146 from the floor. Audrey Biggs and Rebecca Fuchs are the first and second option for the WSU attack with 233 and 225 kills so far this season. Whitney Hunt and Samantha Staker have shared setting duties with 502 and 291 assists, respectively.

Defensively, WSU has recorded 980 digs and 202.5 blocks, averaging 10.89 and 2.25 per set. Megan Bean leads the team with 68 blocks and McKay Tarbox is tops for the Wildcats with 373 digs.

Southern Utah holds a 6-1 advantage over Weber State since the return of the program in 2008. The T-Birds are currently riding a six-match winning streak against the Wildcats.

Last Time Against Weber State

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Sept. 19, 2013 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball ran its winning streak against Weber State to six consecutive matches with a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats in the Centrum Arena on Thursday night.

Kylie Schofield finished the match tops on the team with 12 kills, but was followed closely by Mikayla Dunford with 11 kills, a total that tied her career high. Dunford also hit a season-high .381 (11-3-21) on the night, but trailed Annie Stradling who hit .412 with nine kills on 17 attempts while committing only two errors. Christenson finished the night with a double-double, tallying 40 assists and tied Sariah Pelaez for the team lead in digs as the duo recorded 11 apiece. Taylor Heine led the block, a group that recorded a season-high 14.0 stops on the night, with nine individual blocks, including one solo and eight assists.

Scouting Utah Valley

Utah Valley will host Idaho and Seattle on Thursday and Saturday, leading up to the match with Southern Utah on Monday night. The Wolverines are currently 13-11 on the year and first place in the WAC with a 7-2 conference record.

The Wolverine offense has totaled 1,054 kills hits season, averaging a .211 hitting percentage. Kalani Norris leads the team with 239 kills with Brookelyn Hall directing the attack with a team-best 807 assists.

McKenna Tait leads the team in digs and aces with 351 and 37, respectively. In all, UVU has totaled 1,143 digs and 202.5 blocks, averaging 13.14 and 2.33 per set, respectively. Lauren Stringham leads the Wolverine block with 105 (11 BS, 94 BA) on the year.

Utah Valley holds the series advantage 5-1 since 2009. Southern Utah broke the Wolverines’ streak of five straight wins last year with a straight-set victory in Cedar City.

Last Time Against Utah Valley

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Sept. 18, 2012 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball snapped a five-match unbeaten streak against Utah Valley University on Friday by dispatching the Wolverines in straight sets, 27-25, 25-18 and 25-21.

In addition to pacing the offense with 16 kills, Analaine Mailoto was also tops defensively on the night with 15 digs, marking her fifth double-double of the season. Gabi Mirand, directing the Thunderbird attack, also tallied a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs. Renfro led the T-Bird block with a season-best eight on the night, including one solo block and seven block assists.

First on the Board

Southern Utah has put the first point on the board in over half of its sets played this year, marking the opening point in 37 of its 73 sets played.
