SUU Volleyball Back on the Road as Season Begins to Draw to a Close

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball will play on back-to-back nights this week, traveling to Portland State on Thursday night and Eastern Washington on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds will be looking for their first winning streak of the season after picking up a win over Northern Arizona on Monday night and will also be looking for their first conference road victory this season.

The match in Portland is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. (MT) with the match at EWU slated for 7:00 p.m. (MT). Fans can follow the action via live stat and live video links online at www.suutbirds.com.

Scouting Portland State

Portland State will enter the match with an overall record of 14-10, including an 11-3 mark in Big Sky Conference play. The Vikings are currently second in the league and have won three of their last four matches.

PSU has totaled 1,135 kills this season, averaging 13.7 kills per set and a .213 hitting percentage. Individually, Kaeli Patton and Aubrey Mitchell share the offensive load with 242 and 234 kills, respectively, averaging 2.92 and 2.82 per set. Garyn Schlatter directs the Viking offense, recording 873 assists this season.

Defensively, Portland State has recorded 202 blocks (2.43 per set) and 1,271 digs (15.31 per set). Kasimira Clark leads the team with 419 digs, averaging 5.05 per set, and Leigh-Ann Haataja leads the block with 101 this season.

Portland State holds the all-time series lead 3-0 over Southern Utah since the return of volleyball to SUU in 2008.

Last Time Against Portland State

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 5, 2013 - Southern Utah’s offensive funk continued on Saturday night as the Thunderbirds dropped a three-set decision to Portland State, 25-20, 25-14, 25-20.

Southern Utah was led offensively on the night by Ann Clappier with nine kills and a team-best .333 hitting percentage (9-4-19). The Thunderbirds were led defensively by Sariah Pelaez, Bradfield and Hailey Moore with 12, 10 and 10 digs, respectively. Clappier tied Annie Stradling for the team lead in blocks with five as the team recorded 10.0 total blocks during the night.

Scouting Eastern Washington

Eastern Washington will host Northern Arizona on Thursday before welcoming the Thunderbirds to Cheney on Friday night. The Eagles are currently 8-17 overall and 5-9 in the Big Sky Conference, having snapped a four-match losing streak with a win at Montana State last Saturday.

EWU has tallied 1,023 kills this season, averaging 11.12 per set and a .167 hitting percentage. Allie Schumacher leads the team with 212 kills, also averaging a team-best 2.75 kills per set. Lindsay Niemeier directs the attack, recording 651 assists this season.

Defensively, the Eagles have recorded 1,139 digs (12.38 per set) and 206 blocks (2.24 per set). Individually, Ryann Ensrud leads the team in digs with 281, averaging 3.23 per set, and Allison Doerpinghaus leads the team with 97 blocks, averaging 1.11 per set.

Eastern Washington holds the all-time series lead 3-1 over the T-Birds since the return of volleyball to Southern Utah in 2008.

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 3, 2013 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball suffered a four-set defeat to Eastern Washington on Thursday night, but despite the loss several underclassmen put up career-high numbers during the contest.

Freshman Ann Clappier led Southern Utah’s attack with a career-high 14 kills and also recorded the team’s top efficiency, hitting .250 with six errors on 32 swings. Fellow freshman Sariah Pelaez logged almost one third of the Thunderbirds’ digs, totaling 20 of the team’s 56 on the night. Sophomore Taylor Heine recorded her first double-digit blocking performance of her career, picking up a career-best 10 on one solo block and nine block assists.
