CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's volleyball has announced the signing of three student-athletes that are set to join the T-Birds in 2014. The trio includes Remo Gaogao (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou HS), Katie Elgan (Meridian, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS) and MaCail Wood (Beaver, Utah/Beaver HS).

"This class is the most competitive class that we have recruited," head coach Debby Baker said. "Each one is going to bring a high level of energy to our team that the fans are going to love. We are excited to have them, and their families, become part of our T-Bird family."

Gaogao is a four-year varsity-letter winner at Punahou HS, helping the Buffanblu open the season with a perfect 8-0 record at the Ann Kang Invitational and finish the season as the runner-up at state. Gaogao also helped PHS to back-to-back state titles during her junior and sophomore campaigns. Played club with Ka Ulukoa under head coach Lee Lamb, earning all-tournament honors at the 2011 USAV Junior Nationals.

"Remo is the best all around player that we have recruited at SUU," Baker said. "She has great ball control and sees the court really well when she hits. She has a lot of range when hitting, she can crush it and can also make the most amazing shots. She will make an impact right away."

Elgan is a four-year letter-winner in volleyball, spending two years at Rocky Mountain HS and two years at Highland HS (Pocatello). She was recently named 2013 Under Armour girls high school All-American honorable mention, the first such honor for an SUU volleyball recruit. Elgan helped RMHS to a third-place finish in Idaho this year, earning SIC District 3 Player of the Year honors and first-team all-state accolades. She also earned first-team all-state honors as a junior and captured back-to-back first-team all-district honors as a junior and sophomore. Elgan finished the 2013 season with 414 kills, averaging 4.9 per set and a .578 hitting percentage and 166 blocks, averaging 2.0 per set.

On the club level, Elgan appeared for Pocatello Elite (the same club as current SUU freshman Ann Clappier) and Boise Volleyball Club. Her teams recorded three consecutive top-five GJNC finishes, including a runner-up finish in 2012. Elgin has also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a 3.5 GPA throughout her high school career.

"Katie is very energetic and very athletic," Baker said. "She competes hard all of the time and has an amazing work ethic. "She may not the tallest (5-10), but she will be one of the most athletic middles in the conference. Katie is very quick and moves well, fans are really going to love the energy she brings to the floor."

Wood is a four-year letter-winner in volleyball and basketball at Beaver HS, helping the basketball team to the 2012 state title and a pair of top-five finishes in state on the volleyball court. Along the way, Wood picked up two first-team all-state and one second-team all-state recognitions in volleyball and a first-team all-state, second-team all-state and Defensive MVP honors for basketball.

Wood already has strong ties to Southern Utah University as she is the younger sister to Morgan Wood (Slade) a former women's basketball player at SUU and was coached at BHS by Joe Hillock, former women's basketball head coach at SUU. Wood, like Elgan, is also strong in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and is currently a member of the National Honor Society.

"MaCail is tall and very athletic," Baker said. "I'm always excited when we can get a local player to come to SUU. MaCail is very physical and has a cannon for an arm. She is another kid with an amazing work ethic and is very competitive."

Southern Utah will host its final two home matches this week and then close out the 2013 season on the road at Northern Colorado and North Dakota next week.
