SUU Volleyball Set to Close 2013 on the Road

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball will close out its 2013 season this week, playing on the road at Northern Colorado and North Dakota. The Thunderbirds will face UNC on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. and then UND on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Fans can follow the matches online at via live stat and live video links.

Scouting Northern Colorado

Northern Colorado will enter the contest on Thursday night with an overall record of 12-16, including an 8-10 mark in the Big Sky Conference.

UNC has totaled 1,392 kills this season, averaging 13.01 per set and a .216 hitting percentage. Kendra Cunningham leads the attack with a team-best 323 kills, averaging 3.02 per set. Ashley Guthrie directs the offense, tallying 1,136 assists.

Defensively, the Bears have recorded 1,648 digs, averaging 15.40 per set, and 226 blocks, averaging 2.12 per set. Merideth Johnson leads the team with 552 digs and Brianna Strong leads the team with 114 blocks.

Northern Colorado holds the all-time series lead 3-0, including a straight-set victory in Cedar City earlier this season.

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 19 - Southern Utah University volleyball dropped a three-set decision to Northern Colorado on Saturday night, falling to 2-18 overall on the year and 1-9 in conference play.

Southern Utah’s highlight for the match proved to be its block as the Thunderbirds recorded 8.0 (1-14-2) to Northern Colorado’s 4.0 (0-8-0). Alissa Youart (1-3-1) and Taylor Heine (0-4-0) led the way with four blocks apiece.

Scouting North Dakota

North Dakota will host Northern Arizona on Thursday night before welcoming the Thunderbirds to Grand Forks on senior day. UND is currently tied for first in the Big Sky with a 15-3 conference mark and carries a combined record of 20-10.

UND’s offense has totaled 1,542 kills this season, averaging 13.8 per set and a .249 hitting percentage. Ronni Munkeby leads the team with 357 kills, averaging 3.19 per set, and is followed closely by Lisa Parlich with 337, averaging 3.01 per set. Nikki Husfeldt directs the attack with a team-best 1,165 assists.

Defensively, UND has recorded 296.0 blocks, averaging 2.64 per set and 1,603 digs, averaging 14.31 per set. Parlich leads the block with 134, followed by Munkeby with 124, and Lauren Clarke leads the team with 479 digs.

North Dakota holds the all-time series lead 5-1 with UND taking the first meeting this year in straight sets.

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 17 - Southern Utah University women’s volleyball dropped a three-set decision to league-leading North Dakota on Thursday night, falling to 2-17 overall on the year and 1-8 in conference play. UND moved to 14-7 and 9-0 in the Big Sky, continuing a 10-match winning streak.

Kyle Schofield was the only attacker with double-digit kills, logging a match-best 10. Defensively, Sariah Pelaez led the team with 13 digs and Taylor Heine and Clappier led the block with three apiece.
