FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The SUU volleyball team wrapped up the 2016 season with a 3-0(22-25, 21-25, 21-25) loss to the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona.
The Thunderbirds played tough and close in every set, even leading multiple times with six lead changes in the first, three in the second, and two in the third. Ultimately, they were never able to take the lead for good, narrowly losing all three sets.
Once again, the Thunderbirds were led offensively by senior Chennin Benson who finished her final match as a T-Bird with 16 kills and 46 total attacks. Freshman Alexis Averett ended up with 31 assists on the night. Defensively, the Thunderbirds were led by junior Macky Fifita and senior Sariah Pelaez-Harris with 11 digs and 10 digs respectively. Junior MaCail Evans finished with two solo blocks.
Northern Arizona was eliminated from the race to host in the Big Sky tournament, but finishes with a 22-7 overall record and a spot in the tournament.
SUU finishes the 2016 season with a 4-24 overall record and a 2-14 record in Big Sky play. Benson racked up a total of 346 kills and averaged 3.30 kills per set for 2016. Pelaez-Harris finished with the most digs on the team in her final season with 453, nearly double the next highest number. Senior Ann Clappier led the way in blocks on the season with 20 solo blocks and 103 block assists.
