CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 26 – Southern Utah University cornerback DeWayne Lewis has been selected to participate in this year’s East Coast Bowl, an all-star game featuring players from smaller colleges and universities across the nation. The game is scheduled for Saturday at noon (EST).
Lewis, a senior from Denver, Colo., is a three-year starter who has been among the Thunderbirds’ defensive leaders the past two seasons. This year he tallied 35 tackles with one tackle-for-loss, an interception and five passes broken up as well as forcing a fumble. Last season finished with 51 tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for losses as well as forcing two fumbles. He earned Great West Conference defensive player of the week honors as well last year following the Montana State game. As a sophomore he earned a starting spot midway through the season and wound up with 19 tackles.
“This is a good opportunity for me to show what I can do to a large group of scouts,” Lewis said, noting that most professional teams will be represented by scouts at the game. “It’s the next step in making a dream come true for me. I just want to go out and play hard and try to get an opportunity to play for someone at the next level.”
Lewis, who will play for the North team in the East Coast Bowl, distinguished himself on the track as well as on the football field at SUU, qualifying for the NCAA finals in the sprints in 2007.
