Southern Utah gymnastics will open its 2010 season this week when the Thunderbirds travel to Provo to face Brigham Young University.  The T-Birds will look to continue the momentum built against BYU as SUU swept the Cougars in each of the three meets during the 2009 season.

“The team that we will face on Thursday is not the BYU team that we faced last year,” head coach Scott Bauman said.  “They are all healthy and that will made the meet much closer than last year.”

Southern Utah will be led during the 2010 season by a strong senior class.  The quartet includes three-time All-American Elise Wheeler and the school record holder on the vault in Lindsey Schultz.  Also in the mix is Melissa Johnson who ranks in the top ten in school history on the vault and Bailey Baker who will enter her first season completely healthy.

The senior class will be complimented by a group of three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen who have each helped raise the bar for SUU gymnastics.  One of the reasons for optimism on the season resides in one of the deepest vault lineup in school history as eight gymnasts carry a 10.0 start value.

Last Time Against BYU

PROVO, Utah - Feb. 27, 2009 - Southern Utah gymnastics completed the season sweep against Brigham Young University as the Thunderbirds posted a 194.675-189.125 victory over the Cougars in Provo on Friday night.  The win was the third straight over BYU this season as the T-Birds will likely vault into NCAA regional qualifying scene with their score in the 194’s.

Last Meet

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Jan. 8 - Southern Utah gymnastics hosted its annual Red/White Preview on Friday night as the Red team came away with the victory, hitting 14 of 16 routines to White’s 13 of 16.  Both teams fielded abbreviated lineups as a total of four gymnasts competed on each event instead of six, as will be the case during the regular season.
