CEDAR CITY, Utah - Just two days removed from hosting the Beehive Classic, the Southern Utah softball team hosted the Southern Illinois Salukis in one of their last games before the start of Big Sky conference play.

The Salukis set the tone early jumping all over starting pitcher Kirsten Hostetler scoring six runs on five hits including a two-run home run for first baseman Shaye Harre. Hostetler would be replaced in the circle by Samantha Guile after just ⅔ innings of work.

The Thunderbirds answered back with one run in the their half of the first. With one out in the inning, right fielder Nicole Simonson doubled to right center, moved to third base on a Megan Reed infield single, and scored on a wild pitch from Saluki pitcher Savanna Dover.

Down 6-1 things didn’t get much better for the Thunderbirds, as the Salukis scored another run in the second inning and five more runs in the third. Guile would be replaced by Hanna Wynn after just 1.2 innings of work.

Now down 12-1 the Thunderbirds picked up their second run of the game in the third inning when catcher Morgan Leonard singled in Simonson after she was hit by a pitch and reached second on a walk by Reed.

With the run rule already reached, the Salukis scored another run in the fourth and their final run of the game in the fifth. The Thunderbirds could not muster up enough offense to overcome the 12 run deficit and would eventually lose the game at the end of the fifth inning by a score of 14-2.

Simonson was the lone bright spot in the Thunderbird lineup Tuesday. The sophomore finished the day two for two with two doubles and two runs scored.
