The Thunderbirds are coming off of their third Big Sky series win of the season, taking last weekend’s three-game series against Idaho State two games to one. Southern Utah swept the doubleheader on Friday using two grand slams and a walk-off home run to secure the series victory, but could not get the sweep of the Bengals, dropping the final game of the series on Saturday.
The Thunderbirds also hosted BYU earlier in the week, but fell to the Cougars 13-3 in five innings.
Scouting Report: No. 19/21 BYU Cougars
The Cougars are fresh off a weekend series sweep of WCC opponent Pacific University. They shutout the Tigers in all three games and extended their current winning streak to 10 games.
BYU holds a 31-10 overall record in 2017 and have started WCC conference play 6-0 with sweeps of the Tigers and Loyola Marymount. The Cougars are lead in the circle by senior McKenna Bull who recently became the Cougars’ all-time leader in wins(98) and strikeouts(907). Sophomore Lexi Tarrow leads the Cougars offensively with a .361 batting average in 108 at-bats.
Last season, the Thunderbirds were able to take two out of three games from the Cougars, but dropped the first game of this season’s series last week in Cedar City. A win in Provo would give head coach Tom Gray a 4-3 record against BYU since becoming the head coach of the Thunderbirds.
First pitch on Wednesday is set for 6:00 p.m. at Gail Miller Field in Provo. Links to live stats, video, and audio are available at suutbirds.com and byucougars.com.
